Simmondsia chinensis Seed Oil

This ingredient is present in:

Nutritious Vitamin-Rich Cream

Jojoba oil is actually a wax rich in Omega 9 fatty acid chains. The oil  is liquid at room temperature. A great moisturiser and skin emollient. Its molecule linkages are strong and resistant to friction which mean it leaves no sticky feeling on the skin. Rich in Omega 9.

It has a chemical make up very similar to human sebum, and has excellent protective properties and ability to retain moisture. It forms a transparent, protective film on the skin which slows down the transepidermal water loss and, it will also lock moisture into the hair shaft.

Jojoba oil rode into popularity on the back of the opposition to whale oil which was the traditional base of many cosmetic preparations in the old days.

Jojoba oil has a slight nutty smell and clear golden colour in the raw form, but the refined oil is completely odourless, which means no fragrance must be added to mask the natural scent.

Since the jojoba wax has a very low melting point, it remains in the liquid state all the time, and can be used directly without dilution. Also, being a wax, it does not have as much of a greasy feel as oils.

Rosa Canina Fruit Oil

This ingredient is present in:

Rosehip oil is good for oily, large-pored, combination and sensitive skin, as well as many skin problems. Rosehip Oil is the only oil which contains retinoic acid (Vitamin A).

Rosehip used at Amana comes from Chile and it grows wild in the Southern Andes. Rosehip oil is the only vegetable oil, which contains natural tretinoin, the acid form of vitamin A also known as all-trans-retinoic acid or ATRA in quantities of 125mcg per every 100g.

It is an excellent source of trans-retinoic acid (a natural precursor of vitamin A), which is very effective at treating skin problems. Rosehip Oil is also useful in products for damaged skin tissue and for treating oily skin, sensitive skin, and reducing or reducing fine lines around the eyes, wrinkles and scars. Rosehip is amongst the best vegetable oil source of omega 3 and is also a good source of omega 6, both essential fatty acids collectively known as vitamin F, involved in cellular membrane and tissue regeneration and normalising skin with large pores.

Rosehip is a classic oil for sensitive skin. Its consistency is dry to very dry and rosehip oil is considered to be one of the best anti-wrinkle oils available today. It soothes the fine wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth. It gives elasticity to the skin and helps against skin aging. As the rosehip Oil has a short surface time on the skin, being rapidly absorbed by the skin and not leaving any fatty residue, it makes an excellent face oil.
Rosehip is very healing for skin damaged by, or over-exposed to, ultraviolet radiation from the sun or x-ray radiation.

Olea Europaea Fruit Oil

This ingredient is present in:

Olive oil is excellent for dry skin. It offers skin nourishing, softening & protective qualities. It offers excellent lubrication and a soft, smooth feeling on the skin. Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil we use at Amana is certified Organic. A fatty to half-fatty oil, excellent for mature or dry skin.

Olive oil contains squalane, which is absorbed quickly by the skin. It is well proven that squalane increases the spreadability of vegetable oils and fats on the skin. The substance squalene is also found in the livers of sharks that are found in deep ocean waters and studies have shown that it keeps the oils in the liver in a liquid state down to a temperature of -38°C. Olive-oil derived squalane helps to regulate sebum and very closely resembles human sebum. For use as an emollient, squalane is a traditional, natural alternative to using silicone emollients, which is an often-used chemical in products for its non-fatty skin-softening properties.

Olive oil’s nourishing, softening and protecting properties are well-known but it is also an anti-inflammatory and so very valuable to use in oil blends that treat skin irritations, damaged skin, and itchiness.

Cocos nucifera Oil

This ingredient is present in:

Coconut Butter used at Amana is cold pressed, virgin, aroma retained and organic. It is cold pressed from coconuts and the resulting fat is deodorised leaving  soft, off white coloured butter. A special production technique means that the fresh aroma of the coconut flesh is retained in the butter.

It is an excellent emollient used for conditioning the skin.

In the tropical parts of the world where coconuts are readily available and used in many ways, natives use coconut oil for skin, as they believe that it protects from the sun’s harmful rays.

It is the composition of coconut oil that stands behind its excellent properties in skincare:

Saturated Fats: Predominantly, these saturated fats are medium chain fatty acids or triglycerides. When applied on the skin, they keep it smooth to the touch. Due to the presence of these fats, coconut oil also retains the moisture content of the skin, as the fats eliminate moisture loss through the pores on skin.

Capric /Caprylic/Lauric acid: These are not very different from the medium chain fatty acids, but it is still important to mention them separately here, since they have their own contributions. These three fatty acids have strong disinfectant and antimicrobial properties. As a result, when applied on the skin, coconut oil protects from microbial infections that can get into open wounds or even enter the body through the pores.

Vitamin-E: The contributions of vitamin-E towards skin care are well known. It is essential for healthy skin growth, repair of wear & tear on the skin, keeping skin smooth and protecting against cracking. Above all, it prevents premature aging and wrinkling of the skin, since it has good antioxidant properties. 100 grams of coconut oil has about 0.1 mg of vitamin E,  thus enhancing its skin-nourishing properties.

Proteins: Like coconuts themselves, coconut oil is rich in many proteins. These proteins keep skin healthy and rejuvenated, both internally and externally. Proteins also contribute to cellular health and tissue repair, along with a wide range of other essential activities within the body. For any damaged cells on or near the skin, a healthy of flow of proteins guarantees their replacement at a normal rate.

Butyrospermum parkii Seed Butter

This ingredient is present in:

Used in creams, lotions & massage oils for its moisturising, protective and healing properties, especially for dry and damaged skin.

It is a butter made from the pressed stones of the Shea Butter Tree. After pressing, the butter is a grubby, dark yellow colour which is then filtered. The colour with time becomes a beautiful  rich cream colour.

It is a superb emollient and is excellent for conditioning the skin. Moisturises the skin and restores its elasticity.

Shea Butter contains natural SPF but this is not high to be used as a sun protection product. The low level does, however, give some daily defence against the damaging effects of UV light whilst repairing cellular degeneration.

It is protective and healing, especially for dry and damaged skin. It contains phytosterols which stimulate cell growth at the basal layer of the skin to regenerate faster giving younger and fresher looking skin.

The Shea tree grows wild on the savannah in several of the West African countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Mali. The tree can grow to be 20-25 metres high and has deep roots (20 metres), enabling it to withstand long periods of drought.

The first fruits appear after 8-12 years and peak productivity is reached when the tree is about 40 years old although it can continue to bear fruit for up to 150 years.

Each tree produces approximately 50kg of fruit every year. The shea tree’s fruit (and its stone, or nut) is an important raw material for West Africa and for hundreds of years the local people have used it for food, medicinal, decorative and cosmetic purposes.

Sodium Hyaluronate

This ingredient is present in:

Cruelty-free Sodium Hyaluronate gel made by producing enzymes from a bacteria-based biofermentation process. Used in anti-ageing Amana Golden Line of skincare products and in skin rejuvenation products

Popularly called “The Fountain of Youth”, it is a common ingredient in skin care products, added for its skin rejuvenation properties. The Sodium Hyaluronate gel used ata Amana Aromantic’s Hyaluronic Acid Gel is made by producing enzymes from a bacteria-based biofermentation process and not sourced from poultry (roosters’ combs), as are many other commercially produced Sodium Hyaluronate gels.

Hyaluronic Acid gives the skin its volume and fullness. It is one of the chief components of the extracellular skin matrix and it contributes significantly to cell proliferation. Aging can result in the loss of hyaluronic acid, which in turn results in skin that has less volume and the formation of wrinkles and folds.

It is the most efficient popular humectant that can attract from 600-1000 times its own weight in water so it plumps up the skin and gives it volume.

Its hydrating properties result in increased skin smoothness, softening and decreased appearance of wrinkles.

Its rejuvenating properties result in increased skin smoothness and softness. It also protects the cell structure and defending against external threats and bacterial infections.

It also exhibits viscous flow, elastic and pseudoplastic properties. This property is unique to hyaluronic acid.

By its nature, hyaluronic acid retains water like a sponge and has the ability to absorb a thousand times more than its own weight and plays an important role in tissue hydration, lubrication and cellular function. In short, it is an excellent skin moisturiser.

When the body cannot produce enough of coenzyme Q10 on its own anymore, then low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can penetrate through the skin to reestablish the hyaluronic acid content to more youthful levels.

Alex Schauss, Ph.D., Director of Natural and Medicinal Products Research at AIBMR Life Sciences, explained that aging causes variations in natural hyaluronic acid concentrations in the skin. He points out that enhanced hyluronic acid levels seem to increase collagen production.

Hyaluronic acid gel also protects the cell structure and defends against external threats and bacterial infections.

Aloe barbadensis leaf extract

This ingredient is present in:

An excellent healing Aloe Vera Gel containing Organic Whole Leaf Aloe Vera, Aloe barbadensis Liliaceae. It is well known for its pain relieving, antiseptic and healing properties.

Aloe vera has been used for a host of purposes since the ancient Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality.” Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries.

Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin.

Aloe vera has several properties that are effective in treating a variety of skin conditions and it can be useful in treating wounds and burns and minor skin infections and persistent conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and others.

Aloe Vera is very well know for treating sunburn through its powerful healing activity at the epithelial level of the skin, a layer of cells that cover the body. It acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps replenish its moisture. Because of its nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties, the skin heals quicker.

Aloe Vera moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion.

Faex Extract

This ingredient is present in:

Cruelty-free collagen.  The collagen gel we use at Amana is not sourced from animals or GM 8543 crops. Just as the name implies, it  mimics the action of natural human collagen.  At Amana we are committed to use proteins which are derived from vegetables and other non-animal sources.

Our collagen has been extracted from the intra-cellular matrix from yeast cells in a water-soluble collagen. It is essentially a moisturising complex of sugars and proteins. It has been demonstrated that collagen used by Amana has excellent moisture binding properties, making it especially suited as a collagen replacement.
Collagen provides an important function in the skin matrix, not only for its structural properties, but also for its ability to help hold moisture in the dermis.

The appearance of the skin is directly proportional to its ability to bind water. Upon ageing, the collagen and elastin content in connective tissue reduces with an accompanying decrease in ability to retain moisture. Collagen imparts greater elasticity, more resilience and a youthful look to skin through its moisture-binding and film-forming properties, it also affords excellent moisturising properties giving skin a supple, healthy appearance.

Antioxidants

Open to read

Aloe barbadensis leaf extract

This ingredient is present in:

Anitoxidants:

Antioxidants occur naturally in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, wine, and chocolate. While there are thousands of antioxidant compounds out there, like flavanols (found in chocolate), Resveratrol (found in wine), and lycopene (found in tomatoes). Other popular antioxidants include vitamins A (beta-carotene), C, E, and catechins.

Antioxidants help prevent or stop cell damage caused by oxidants.

What are oxidants?

‘They are free radicals found in the environment, but they’re also produced naturally in the body. ‘ says Diane McKay, Ph.D., an assistant professor and researcher at Tufts University’s Antioxidants Research Laboratory.

Our bodies create them to help fend off viruses and microbes, but too many, and they can cause damage.

Anti-oxidants used in Amana products are derived from Organic rosemary and pomegranate extracts.

Properties of anti-oxidants in skincare:

Anti-inflammation

One of the most desirable benefits of antioxidants in skin-care products is the calming of inflammation. Antioxidants produce valuable anti-inflammatory results by increasing circulation and cell metabolism. Reducing inflammation promotes more even skin tone and helps keep acne and wrinkles at bay.

Skin firming

Antioxidants may actually reverse the effects of aging by improving skin health and rejuvenating its appearance. Coenzyme Q-10, or CoQ-10, is a common skin-firming antioxidant and is great for use in eye creams and products that are meant to tone the skin. Try moisturizers and other skin treatments with skin-firming antioxidants.

Reduced appearance of wrinkles

Amana skincare products with antioxidants can help plump out the skin and make it appear more youthful. Most antioxidants are great for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, but vitamins C and E are especially beneficial.

Scar treatment

Scar tissue has a different cell structure than that of healthy skin, making it rigid. Many types of antioxidants, including those found in aloe vera, increase blood flow to scar tissue, minimizing the look of the scar and blending in the development of new skin.

Repair of sun damage:

We all know that too much sun is dangerous, but it can also be bad for your skin’s appearance, drying it out and damaging cells. Sun damage can make skin appear tough and wrinkly. Antioxidants that stimulate blood flow in the skin can help encourage the growth of new cells and make sun-damaged skin appear younger.

Rosemary antioxidant

Rosmarinus officinalis leaf extract

Rosemary antioxidant contains a high percentage of diterpene phenols which means this product has exceptional antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. This material is obtained from rosemary leaves from organic farming.

Pomegranate antidant seed contains mainly ellagic acid, which is a polyphenols antioxidant found in fruits and berries. The highest ellagic acid content is found in raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates.

Pomegranate is high in ellagic acid. Ellagic acid and other polyphenols help to regulate cell turnover and give the cell time to divide normally and form completely. Ellagic acid is also thought to strengthen the cell membrane, making it less susceptible to free radical damage and preventing water loss from the cell.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant compound found in high amounts amongst the skins of grapes and in red wine.

The skin’s youthful appearance deteriorates over time due to intrinsic factors such as oxidative stress and extrinsic factors like ultraviolet exposure, smoking, and air pollution.

Under ideal circumstances, the body uses its own supply of antioxidants to defend itself against the free radicals that affect the skin’s appearance. These intrinsic antioxidants can be depleted by chronological aging as well as by UV light exposure.

For youthful skin to thrive it needs collagen and elastin, which free radicals can affect the production of. Resveratrol is a particularly potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radical damage and allows the collagen to keep on pumping. The way it banishes wrinkles and enhances firmness is similar to the regenerating process that allows grape vines to live for many years.

Research from the darling French brand has shown a new synergy between resveratrol, and a complex of micro hyaluronic acids. Each of these ingredient is individually effective, but together they create an ingredient powerhouse  that support the skin’s own production of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid.

In nature, resveratrol functions as part of a plant’s defensive arsenal. Resveratrol is an antimicrobial substance produced by plants in response to stress, infection, or strong UV radiation.

It appears that resveratrol exerts its potent antioxidant effects on two distinct levels: (1) by scavenging existing free radicals and (2) by preventing their formation.

The antioxidant ability of resveratrol is known to be both potent and efficient.

Resveratrol is also able to form soluble, complex molecules with certain metal ions, inactivating the ions so they cannot produce free radical formation. This action, in combination with its powerful antioxidant capability, makes resveratrol highly effective in combating the damaging effect of free radicals that leads to skin aging.

Resveratrol is also reported to stimulate healthy cell proliferation as well as collagen synthesis by protecting the dermal matrix from harmful enzymes and improving the function of fibroblasts that create healthy collagen.

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant found in the cell walls of plants such as rice and oats and the seeds of apples and oranges, where it plays a key role in the plants’ protection and self-preservation.

When applied topically, ferulic acid acts like other antioxidants in that it helps to slow the ageing process by reducing the effects of damaging free radicals on the skin. It is also thought to protect against sun damage, as well as assisting in skin’s regeneration functions to tackle skin that has already been over-exposed. In addition it has the benefit of working well alongside other antioxidants, enhancing the stability and the efficacy of vitamins C and E.

Ferulic acid fights free radicals and slows down the ageing process caused by oxidation. It stabilises highly-oxidative vitamin C in skincare products as an extra benefit.

Kakadu plum

Open to read

This ingredient is present in:

One of the richest sources of Vitamin C in the world kakadu plum  is a powerful antioxidant protecting the skin against environmental ageing. Since Vitamin C stimulates an amino acid that’s required to make collagen, kakadu plum can help plump and restore skin cells resulting in amazing anti-ageing effects. Vitamin C is also a skin brightener used to correct dark circles, pigmentation, age spots and provide a general radiance boost.

Native to Northern Australia, the kakadu plum is a small green fruit, just 1-2 cm in size. It may be called a plum, but it is actually more closely related to the almond. Some say the fruit looks and tastes like an English gooseberry.

The fruit was used for thousands of years by Australian Aborigines as a natural medicine to treat a variety of skin conditions as well as for it’s health benefits.

Kakadu plum contains highest recorded levels of Vitamin C of any fruit in the world, measuring up to 100 times the Vitamin C content found in an orange.

Why is Vitamin C so Important for the Skin?

There are 2 structural proteins that help to keep our skin plump and prevent sagging. These are known as collagen and elastin. As we age, our collagen and elastin levels naturally decrease, which can then lead to the first signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C helps to promote the formation of these 2 proteins, therefore helping to keep your skin plump and youthful. The skin benefits best from topically applied vitamin C, rather than by ingesting it, which is primarily for health benefits.

Vitamin C is also a very powerful antioxidant that protects the skin against free radicals, which are the enemy when it comes to aging the skin. Free radicals may come in the form of environmental pollution, cigarette smoke and even the food we eat. Another powerful group of antioxidants called phenols work together with vitamin C to provide extra antioxidant protection!

Apart from the powerful antioxidant activity vitamin C provides, the kakadu plum is also a rich source of:

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another antioxidant vitamin that helps to repair and heal the skin. Because it is an antioxidant it also helps to protect against free radicals.

Phytochemicals

Kakadu plums contain a phytochemical called gallic acid that fights against inflammation. Inflammation is responsible for skin conditions such as acne and it even accelerates the signs of aging over time.

Minerals

We often overlook the importance of minerals for a healthy complexion. Kakadu plums contain the minerals zinc, iron, lutein and folate, all of which are essential for a healthy, clear complexion.
